Two containers, two open properties, and almost no pavement between them. All Waste Dumpsters set the first box on an old asphalt pad beside a farm building in February, while the oaks were still bare, and the second on mowed grass at a newly landscaped property in June. Here is how each one went.
Both were commercial jobs around Ocala. Neither had a loading dock, a striped lot, or a curb to back up to. That is common here. Open ground has its own rules. Plenty of commercial work in this part of Florida happens on acreage rather than in parking lots, and the container has to fit the property instead of the other way around. The June load was mostly cardboard and plastic packaging, and the February box was packed with bagged trash. Usually, as long as the ground is dry and the truck has a firm path in and out. The June container sat on mowed grass beside a concrete walkway, and the truck stayed on the hard edge until the last few feet.
The container is the easy part. A loaded roll off spreads its weight along two long rails, and on dry turf it sits fine for a week. The truck is much heavier than the box, and it is what actually ruts a lawn, especially in Marion County's sandy soil right after a heavy summer storm has soaked the ground. So before anything goes on grass, we look at the route in. Can the driver stay on a walkway or a packed drive most of the way? Is there a septic tank, a drain field, or an irrigation line in the path?
Owners know where those are. We usually do not, so we ask. If a storm has just soaked the property, moving the drop to a drier day can save both the lawn and the schedule.
What if the only hard surface is old, cracked asphalt?
Use it, and keep boards under the front of the container so the steel does not chew up the broken edges. The February box went onto a weathered pad in front of the building's breezeway, the only paving on that side of the property.
Old asphalt beats grass and loses to concrete. It carries the weight, but cracked sections crumble where the rollers sit, and a loaded box dragged a few inches at pickup will tear loose pieces right out of the surface. That is where our 1x6 boards earn their keep. We skip plywood on purpose. It is thin, it splits under a loaded can, and then the damage lands on the owner's pad anyway.

What should a business tell us before a delivery?
Where the box should go, what is going into it, and who will be on site when the truck arrives. Those three answers head off almost every surprise we see on commercial property.
Start with placement. Walk the spot and picture a truck backing in with a container on its bed, then look up for branches and wires. Gates are the usual pinch point on farms and fenced lots, so measure the opening before delivery day. Contents come next. Cardboard and packaging, like the June load, are bulky and light, while pallets, block, and roofing are the opposite and can push a box toward its weight limit fast.
